Something Mrs Wainwright has enjoyed this week was seeing the exciting start the children have made in school. Some classes have already started posting on our social media pictures, have a look and sign up to follow us.

Thank you to all the parents who visited their child’s class after school on Tuesday. It is one of the ways we are trying to involve parents and let you see where your children spend most of their day. There will be parents’ consultations in October for you to be able to speak to the teacher directly about how they have settled in the new school year. You will receive invitations closer to the time.

Worship – Our current theme is thankfulness and this week we have started to think about the different people in school who help us. We have also discussed our attribute, ‘optimism’ and how this links to thankfulness. We have reflected on how we should see the positive things and be grateful for them.
Showing gratitude and being thankful for what people do for us is respectful and a chance for us to make choices which promote the British Values of Liberty and Respect.
REMINDERS
- Bikes and Scooters - school is not responsible for scooters and bikes left at school. If your child brings a scooter or bike, please provide a lock. They should not be left over night as this is when they are most likely to be taken. They rarely go missing but if they do it is upsetting for the child and costly for you.
- Flu Vaccinations – if you need support logging on and registering please ask at the office.
- Coats/Cardigans/Jumpers – make sure these have their name in, ask if you would like us to do this. It is very difficult to find clothes if they do not have names in. Thank you.
Nursery Places – if you have a child who is 3 years old and does not already attend a Nursery please ask at the office about a place. We expect to be full by April so please do not leave it too late to get your child started.
Spending time in Nursery prior to starting Reception is the best way to prepare children for school and to develop those skills needed.If you have any questions, please come and ask.
Headlice - Head Lice are a common problem in school aged children. They can’t be prevented, but regular checking ensures early detection and treatment if necessary. Parents and carers should check their children’s head once a week during hair washing. You need your usual shampoo, conditioner, and a detection comb – ask your local pharmacist to recommend a suitable one. Remember that you are looking for living moving lice, which is the only evidence that your child is infected. If you find a living louse, sellotape it to a piece of light coloured paper and take it to your local pharmacy (Leeds only) who will advise you and can provide free Hedrin lotion under the Pharmacy First Minor Ailments Scheme. Combs are available from the office.
Attendance
We expect all children to be in school every day and on time. 8.30am for Nursery, 12.30pm in the afternoon and by 8.50am for the rest of school. Thank you
The first two weeks have been a good start for attendance, we have had some amazing days over 98% which is fantastic. KEEP IT UP!
We still have families taking holidays in term time and you will be fined. Only in exceptional circumstances discussed in advance and agreed will be authorised.
Punctuality is already an issue – we are having up to 20 children late on some days which is not acceptable. Children must be in Nursery by 8.30am (8.40am at the latest) and the rest of school by 8.50am.
Arriving late disrupts the start of the day for your child and others, and is upsetting when they have to walk in a class that has already started, it also means lost learning.

Weekly Round Up
Nursery – It has been wonderful to welcome our Nursery children and their families. The children have been settling in really well. We have been exploring both the indoor and outdoor areas of the Nursery and getting to know each other. The children have really enjoyed painting, making sandcastles, moulding dough, and making new friends. Our first topic is ‘All about me’. We will learn about what your child likes and dislikes, encourage the children to describe themselves, and talk about emotions. We would appreciate it if you could share some family photographs with us. The children will have an opportunity to share these with us and their peers.
Reception –What lovely 2 weeks in Reception we have had. The children have settled into their new classes really well and have been really busy exploring their new environment and making new friends. We have been doing lots of getting to know you activities including circle times and parachute. This week we have listened to the story ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ and have started learning the story using a story map and actions. We have learnt 4 new sounds on phonics this week, s,a,t and p. We are working hard to recognise them using flash cards and read a few simple words.
Year 1 & 2 - In Year 1 this week the children have been reading the story the ‘High Way Rat’ and have looked at words to describe the characters. In Year 2 children have begun there work on castles, they have focused on different vocabulary to use to label parts of a castle.
Year 3 & 4 – This week, Year 3 have been looking at partitioning numbers to 100 in Maths. We have also enjoyed reading the story of Beowulf in English and have been creating our own hero this week. In History, we have started looking at The Anglo-Saxons and how their lives were different to ours now. In PSHE, we have been looking at drugs and how some, like medicines, help our bodies. In Science, we have been looking at the names of functions of different parts of a plant.
Year 4 - This week, we have been reading the story of Oliver Twist. We have also started looking at using fronted adverbials, which is a skill we will be developing all year. In Maths, we have been looking at numbers to 1000 and plotting them on a number line. In PSHE, we have been looking at the law and different rules we have, how they are created and what happens if we break them. In Science, we enjoyed using data loggers to go on a sound hunt around school to see which areas were the quietest and loudest.
Year 5 & 6 - Children have made an excellent start to Years 5 and 6 and we are very impressed with how the children have behaved over the past two weeks.
Lessons: In Science, children have learnt about planets in the solar system. In English, children have started to look at the Titanic and the importance of writing effective setting descriptions. Children have imagined themselves as passengers on the Titanic and have written a setting description of the dock before boarding the Titanic.
Homework: Homework is given on Mondays and must be completed by the following Monday. Each week, children will be expected to complete homework on Emile (with tasks set in Grammar, Punctuation and Maths) and Oxford Owl (tasks set in Spelling). Spelling Homework will be set from Monday 22nd September. Children will also be encouraged to use Reading Plus at home to support their reading development. There will be a Homework Club every Monday lunchtime for children in Years 5 and 6, giving them the opportunity to complete homework during the school day. Children who complete all their homework will be rewarded with a longer lunchtime on Friday.
